Socratic Summer Academy offers college consulting!
What is college consulting? What do you do?
We coordinate the whole college process, making sure you don’t miss college admissions deadlines and have all your ducks in a row. There are a lot of things to remember, to orchestrate, to strategize - let us make it easy for you!
College list - targets, reaches, safeties (including realistic predictions of your success)
Filling out the Common Application
SAT and ACT prep
Which test to take
Whether or not to take the SAT/ACT again
Interview prep, role-playing, and coaching
Financial aid help
Student resume/extracurriculars
Making it easy for recommenders to give you the best recommendation possible (brag sheet, bulleted recommendations)
Where are the sessions held?
Right now, all consulting takes place via Zoom (an online videochat platform, similar to Skype).
How do I prepare for the sessions?
#AskAlyssa - it’s a great way to get started, and honestly save you quite a bit of money!
Based on what you learn at the webinar, do as much of the legwork as you want on your own with the tools that I give
Start with your student’s cumulative (freshman-junior) GPA and SAT/ACT score
Go to collegesimply.com and make a list of targets, reaches, and safeties
Start narrowing according to the six metrics to consider when thinking about colleges
You'll get the most out of our work together - and pay the least - if you are as proactive as possible. Most of what you'll need is your student’s engagement and hard work - if you have that, everything else will go smoothly. Encourage him/her/them to shoot for colleges that are good at many subject areas and offer a lot of different options, so that he/she/they can sample multiple academic disciplines and figure out what's interesting/compelling/pays well - a life that is a realistic and exciting choice.
Remember that we change so much, and our critical thinking skills don’t fully develop until ages 26-29. So more choice - when it comes to college - is better.
Who are our college consultants?
Socratic Summer Academy teachers and staff with years of experience getting students into college - including our Executive Director Alyssa Bowlby and former Executive Director of a college access organization in Baltimore, Anastasia Marouani - help families plan their kids’ college application trajectory.
How often do you meet with families?
We can meet with families as much as is needed per month; during the college application season (September - December), we meet more. We try to limit the number of meetings as much as possible, to save families time and money - we’ll give you work to do on your own and then come back to us with results. The more work you do on your own, the more quickly we will go!
