If you’re an international student considering studying abroad in the U.S., oftentimes the biggest obstacle is the price tag. U.S. colleges and universities are definitely not known for their affordability. 

However, many people are unaware of the numerous scholarship opportunities available to international applicants that can lift this burden - they’re definitely not easy to find, either. Here, we’ve done ALL the research for you! Find over 50 full ride and free tuition scholarships available to international students in the Western U.S., updated as of May 2021!

  1. Claremont McKenna College (Claremont, California)

    1. Interdisciplinary Science Scholars: Offers full tuition as part of the Scholar Community Program. This scholarship is available for students with a passion for science and leadership and financial need. Admitted students are selected for this program based on their applications, and students with a specific interest in one of the communities should submit an addendum documenting it in their application. International students must complete the need-based financial aid forms in order to be considered. There is no separate application.

    2. Seaver Scholars: Offers a full-tuition merit scholarship to incoming freshmen. Selections are based on exceptional leadership as well as a commitment to making a positive impact in the world. Admitted students are selected for this program based on their applications, and students with a specific interest in one of the communities should submit an addendum documenting it in their application. International students must complete the need-based financial aid forms in order to be considered. There is no separate application.

    3. Lingdaoli Scholarship: This scholarship has been established to cover the costs of a 4-year undergraduate career for one high school aged student each year from the People’s Republic of China. It will cover tuition, room and board, books, travel expenses (two round-trip tickets from the PRC), a small monthly stipend, and a sponsored internship. The scholarship is awarded to a student demonstrating academic excellence, a commitment to responsible citizenship, and financial need. Preference will be given to applicants who apply for admission by the Early Decision I deadline of November 1, but there is no separate application.

  2. Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, California)

    1. Arrupe Scholarship: Offers scholarships ranging from $12,5000 annually to full tuition. 

    2. Presidential Scholarship: Offers $25,000 annually for four years for the strongest applicants. The Presidential Scholarship also includes a paid summer research opportunity through the Summer Undergraduate Research Program and participation in the Office of Career and Professional Development’s Presidential Scholarship Mentorship Program.

  3. Occidental College (Los Angeles, California)

    1. Barack Obama Scholars Program: Offers a loan-free financial aid package that covers tuition, room and board, books, summer travel, and other expenses. Selections are based on outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to the public good. Students who are first-generation college students, military veterans or community college transfers are given preference. There is no separate application.

  4. Soka University of America (Aliso Viejo, California)

    1. Makiguchi Scholarship: Offers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, travel and personal expenses, books, and supplies. One Makiguchi Scholarship is given to an international applicant who has graduated from high school in an African nation, demonstrates academic achievement, outstanding character, and has financial need. All admitted students are given automatic consideration for this award.

    2. Ikeda Scholarship:  Offers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, travel and personal expenses, books, and supplies for one year. This scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship program at Soka University, and is awarded to one incoming sophomore, one incoming junior, and one incoming senior each year. Selections are based on academic accomplishment with experiences in leadership and service.

  5. University of Southern California (Los Angeles, California)

    1. Mork Family Scholarship: This scholarship includes full tuition plus annual $5,000 living stipends for four years. The application is open to incoming freshmen, and students must apply to the university by the December deadline.

    2. Trustee Scholarship: This scholarship includes full tuition and is awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, service, and talent. Freshmen applicants must apply by the December university application deadline and are automatically considered. After interviews are conducted in late February and early March, finalists are contacted in late January or early February.

    3. Stamps Scholarship: This scholarship covers full tuition and includes a $20,000 enrichment fund, a scholarship advisor, and on and off campus events. Applications are open to incoming freshmen, awards are based on perseverance, innovation, involvement, and leadership are considered.
